LLM in Legal Practice

UCLan’s Master’s degree in legal practice gives you the opportunity to gain the professional qualification needed to become a solicitor, at the same time as achieving a Masters qualification.

You will be taught the core practice areas and practical legal skills in an innovative way with interactive workshops sessions focusing on giving you the opportunity to experience real world learning. Each of your modules will be supported by the University’s virtual learning environment “Blackboard” where you can review recorded lectures and seminars and take part in interactive learning activities.

As a full time student you will be taught the core LPC practice areas of Business Law and Practice, Litigation and Property Law and Practice in semester one, alongside Business Accounts and the skill of drafting and legal writing. In semester two you will focus on the skills of advocacy, interviewing and advising, Professional Conduct and Regulation and practical legal research as well as studying Solicitors Accounts; Wills Probate and the Administration of Estates and your elective choices. In addition, throughout the year you will be writing a 5,000-word practice based research project.

As a part time student, the core practice areas and skills will be divided between the two years. In year one you will study Litigation; Wills Probate and Administration of Estates; advocacy; interviewing and advising and legal writing. In year two you will study Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice, Solicitors accounts, Professional Conduct and Regulation, drafting and legal research and writing a 5,000-word practice based research project.

You will have exclusive access to a professional resource room whilst the University is open which contains practitioner texts as well as IT facilities. UCLan’s library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during term time and our e-resources are accessible wherever you are.

Our aim is to make you ready for practice and as such you will be encouraged and supported to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities. You can engage in our pro bono activities including our mediation clinic and general law clinic, both of which are open to students, staff and local citizens. You can also volunteer with the Personal Support Unit at the courts in Preston and help in UCLan’s Pop-Up Advice “shop” working with the Citizens Advice Bureau in the City Centre. With all of these activities you will have the chance to meet and advise “real” clients supported by professional legally trained staff.

You can also take part in the competitions run by the Law School. These are run both internally and externally against other Universities, in various competitions including mooting, negotiation and mediation competitions. In 2016 one of our students won an International prize for the best individual mediator.

The course has a high staff/student ratio which means that you will be taught by highly qualified and experienced legal professionals. You will be supported throughout your studies by an Academic Advisor who is there for both academic and pastoral support, so there is always someone to turn to. In addition, as an LPC student you will have access to excellent careers advice from a member of academic staff within the law school dedicated to providing support for students on our vocational courses and delivering workshops dedicated to CV writing, career development and employability as our aim is to make you practice ready.
