LLM Law and International Security

The LLM in Law and International Security will offer a unique overview of how different types of law, including international law, define and regulate a range of different security issues ranging from terrorism and war crimes through to maritime security. It will provide students with analytical and reflective skills and with a learning experience which will enable students to develop their academic ability and enhance their performance in employment and further develop their career opportunities. There is also an opportunity to meet students from other backgrounds and countries. Successful completion of the Masters programme will provide the student with a recognised postgraduate qualification in a specialised area of law.

The LLM should be of interest to a wide range of individuals concerned both academically and professionally with contemporary security issues, challenges and problems. The course is taught by academics who are specialist in their field and who contribute to current legal and policy debates. It has been set up in such a way as to allow a flexible and contextual approach to the topics discussed.

The programme offers excellent career prospects for those wishing to pursue careers with international organisations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Organisation of American States, the African Union and the Arab League.    

Course Information:

Students take 6 modules and a dissertation of 15,000 words (in the area of international human security).  For the LLM in Law & International Security, students must take 4 compulsory modules: Advanced Legal Systems; International Criminal Law & Security; Transnational Regulation of Terrorism and the Law Relating to Security at Sea, plus 2 optional modules from a list which includes International Human Rights and Transnational Regulation of Human Trafficking, and an independent research project.

Where English is not the applicants first language then a score of 6.5 on IELTS (with no individual component below 6.0) or equivalent.
